Background: Professional banker having qualified as Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in 1981 – ACIB.
Joined NatWest in 1974 and worked my way through the various traditional jobs in the Bank. I was trained at an early stage to deal with SME’s in particular lending requirements. I was a Branch Manager at two locations before becoming Senior Business Manager in Maidstone. At the time I left I was looking after 260 clients of various sectors with a lending portfolio of around £10M.
Left NatWest in 2001 to join Bank of Scotland as Associate Director New Business where my role was to build and work with a network of introducers looking at new lending proposals and win new business to the bank. A ‘can do attitude’ was essential for this role to be able to find a solution for the bank and the client, which I continue with to this day. Once again business covered various sectors but during my time with that bank I secured new lending in excess of £45M.
I decided that my introducers were not all providing a good service to clients and that using my lending skills and banking knowledge had a good opportunity of providing a better service so left the bank to form CFS. I have placed successfully over £30M of lending within the market for clients.
What can I do?
Through my knowledge I can identify what the client actually needs and structure a proposal that is more likely to be accepted by lenders. Through my network of contacts I can have sensible conversations with possible funders to get the best for the client – not always price but structure also. I am independent and therefore have access to the whole market.
Typically I look for established, profitable businesses that require finance of £100,000 plus (below this I tend to become just a cost and banks have little appetite to negotiate).
I also want businesses that require help in improving performance & profits or who are in need of help in negotiations with their banks. I would like to access commercial property owners that are UK tax payers (sole, partnership or limited company) as I could help them reduce their tax burden using unclaimed capital allowances on the buildings.
